Address standardization plays an important role in address verification. It is impossible to verify a postal address unless the postal authority sets guidelines for address formatting.

The first step in checking the validity of a postal address is to standardize the address by using the postal authorities’ standards. An example of standardization would be that the United States Postal Service and Canadian Post require all letters in a postal address to be capitalized.

Address standardization by itself greatly increases deliverability time and percentage of successful deliveries. Unfortunately standardization is not a complete solution and does not maximize the reduction in undeliverable mail.
